LOCATION
In 1986, the National Institute of Anthropology and History decreed the federal protection of the zone of historical monuments of the city of San Francisco de Campeche, valuing it as one of the main port cities of the Viceroyalty of New Spain and considering the traditional houses of the city as having a great Andalusian or Caribbean influence. In addition, the chromatic research studies of façades revived the timid tones of washed-out color in the buildings of Campeche in a harmonious and luminous urban landscape.
The exhaustive works of intervention and restoration of the city, encouraged the authorities and its population to apply to UNESCO for the most important recognition granted by the organization, that is, that this cultural asset be inscribed on theWorld Heritage List as "CityHistoric and Fortified Campeche", in December 1999 .
